Pick the band, then the technology, then the model

A refrigerated dryer is chosen in three steps. The flow band comes from the compressor: multiply rotary screw horsepower by 4.3 to 4.6 or piston horsepower by 3.5 to 4 for delivered SCFM, then correct for inlet and room temperature. The technology comes from the duty cycle: non-cycling for a compressor that stays loaded, cycling for a plant that idles nights and weekends. The model comes from the series tables, where every part number lists its connection, voltage, power and dimensions.

Special conditions jump the queue. Air straight off a piston compressor at 180 to 200°F goes to the high-inlet-temperature dryers; PET blow molding at 500 to 725 psig goes to the high-pressure line; test benches and breathing-air systems to 6,000 psig to the ultra-high-pressure series.

What a refrigerated dryer does

Compressed air leaves the compressor saturated with water vapor at whatever temperature the aftercooler achieves, usually 100 to 120°F. The dryer chills it to about 35°F against a refrigeration circuit, condenses the vapor out, drains the water and reheats the air on its way out so the pipes downstream do not sweat. The result is a pressure dew point near 38°F, ISO 8573-1 class 4, which is dry enough for every indoor plant-air use: no water can condense in a line that never gets below 38°F.

Where it stops

A refrigerated dryer cannot go below freezing, so it is the wrong dryer for outdoor lines in winter, laser assist gas or instrument air with a specified -40°F dew point. Those are desiccant duties; the refrigerated versus desiccant page draws the line and we can source the desiccant unit when a plant needs one.

Current series and their predecessors

The site lists the current series first and keeps the previous generation beside them. A plant replacing a ten-year-old unit can look up the old part number, read its flow and connections, and go straight to the current model that replaces it size for size. The replacement page walks through the nameplate; the series pages carry the cross-reference.

Sized by people, not a form

Every quote is sized by an application person from the compressor data: horsepower and type, aftercooler, room temperature, hours loaded, line pressure and what the air feeds. From non-cycling to cycling

The non-cycling series above run their refrigeration continuously and hold the evaporator with a hot-gas bypass valve. The cycling series below store cold in a thermal mass, or throttle a digital-scroll or variable-speed compressor, so the refrigeration circuit works only as hard as the air load demands. Same dew point, same flow bands; the difference is the electricity bill at part load and the first cost.

When the standard dryer is the wrong dryer

Three conditions defeat a standard refrigerated dryer: inlet air well above 120°F, line pressure above 250 psig, and the ultra-high pressures of test and breathing-air systems. The special-duty series below are built for exactly those conditions rather than derated versions of a standard unit, and each has its own flow range and part numbers.
