Features

  • Stainless steel brazed-plate exchanger combining precooler, chiller, separator and the phase-change reservoir in one assembly
  • The refrigeration compressor stops when the reservoir is fully charged and restarts on demand, so power follows the air load
  • No-air-loss demand drain empties the separator without venting compressed air
  • LCD controller with energy monitoring and a USB port for downloading the run log

Ratings

  • Pressure dew point: 38°F, ISO 8573-1 class 4-5
  • Pressure drop: 2.2 to 5.0 psid at rated flow
  • Cooling: Air-cooled; water-cooled -W builds from 800 SCFM
  • Controls: LCD controller with energy monitoring and USB port

Cold stored in a phase-change reservoir

The four-in-one exchanger at the heart of the FLEX design

The FLEX Series was the cycling dryer that brought phase-change thermal storage to plant air from 75 to 2,000 SCFM: a stainless steel brazed-plate four-in-one exchanger with a reservoir of phase-change material that stores cold, so the refrigeration compressor switches off at part load and restarts only when the reserve is spent. Twelve air-cooled sizes and five water-cooled sizes from 800 SCFM carry the FLX part-number prefix. It is the previous generation. New orders ship from the FLXA Series size for size, and the FLEX part numbers stay listed here so an existing unit can be matched to its replacement without guesswork.

What changes on the way to the FLXA. Every FLEX size has an FLXA of the same rating: FLX3.1 to FLXA3.1-A, FLX8.1-W to FLXA8.1-W; Low-GWP R513A through 550 SCFM and R454C from 800 SCFM replace the older refrigerants; Connection sizes match through 1,250 SCFM; the 1,500 and 2,000 SCFM units move from 4 in to 6 in flanges; Cabinets grow a few inches in each direction on most sizes, so check the space before the swap.

Reading a FLEX part number. FLX1.5 is 150 SCFM, FLX4.5 is 450, FLX12.5 is 1,250; a trailing -W means a water-cooled condenser and -FP a filter package; Match the FLXA on the same number and suffix, then confirm voltage: 115 V single phase through 150 SCFM, 460 V from 200; If the plant has added compressors since the dryer went in, resize from delivered SCFM rather than copying the number.

Flows are at 100 psig and 100°F inlet in a 100°F room; the -4 suffix is the 460 V build, -W the water-cooled condenser, and -FP adds the filter package. These part numbers are the previous generation; new orders are supplied from the FLXA Series, which is the direct replacement.

Cabinets, connections and what the FLXA changes

Twelve air-cooled cabinets plus five water-cooled builds at 800 SCFM and up.

The 75 SCFM FLX1.1 is a 30 x 14 x 24 in cabinet at 120 lb on 1 in NPT; the 100 SCFM unit is 28 x 14 x 31 in at 147 lb. From 150 to 550 SCFM the connections are 2 in NPT and the cabinets run from 30 x 18 x 36 in at 203 lb to 41 x 20 x 49 in at 396 lb. The 800 and 1,000 SCFM units are 59 in tall on 3 in flanges at 1,056 and 1,211 lb, and the 1,250 to 2,000 SCFM units are 59 x 39 in with 4 in flanges, 62 to 69 in deep, at 1,537 to 2,028 lb.

The water-cooled -W builds are narrower at 28 in and lighter at 926 to 1,204 lb through 1,250 SCFM; the 1,500 and 2,000 SCFM water-cooled units stand 78 in tall. When an FLXA goes into the same spot, allow for the larger cabinet: the air-cooled 1,500 and 2,000 SCFM replacements are 90.8 in tall and 87.9 in deep with 6 in flanges, so the header connections and the ceiling height both need a look before the old unit comes out.

The outline above is the original FLEX cabinet; a drawing of the matching FLXA size is supplied with every replacement quote.
