The VDR Series drives its scroll compressors through an inverter, so the refrigeration output follows the air load continuously rather than in steps or on-off cycles. Seven sizes from 2,600 to 8,450 SCFM come in air-cooled (A) and water-cooled (W) versions, the water-cooled units absorbing roughly a third less power. An electronic stepper-motor expansion valve, a touch-screen controller, zero air loss drains and a standby mode that idles the dryer when airflow stops complete the package. Against a non-cycling dryer of the same size the energy saving runs to 70 or 80 percent at typical plant loads, and the 158°F inlet rating gives room for a hot aftercooler.
Two cooling options, one controller. The VDR 2600 A draws 9.9 kW; the VDR 2600 W draws 6.1 kW for the same 2,600 SCFM; At 8,450 SCFM the air-cooled unit draws 28.1 kW and the water-cooled 19.7 kW; Touch-screen controller with the dew point, compressor status and alarm history on one display; 6 in ANSI flanges through 5,050 SCFM and 8 in on the two largest sizes.
What continuous modulation is worth. A non-cycling dryer of that size draws its full rating around the clock; the VDR 5050 A at 19.1 kW full load follows the plant down to a fraction of that; Take the water-cooled VDR 5050 W and the full-load figure itself drops to 12.8 kW, with 78 gpm of cooling water doing the rest; The saving is largest on a plant with long low-load hours: a second shift at half flow, weekends on standby.

The VDR 2600 A stands 90.4 in tall, 58 in wide and 62.2 in deep at 1,940 lb, with 6 in ANSI flanged air connections. The water-cooled VDR 5050 W is 67.9 in tall on the same 58 x 62.2 in footprint at 1,918 lb, and needs about 78 gpm of cooling water at 84°F. Flanges are 6 in through 5,050 SCFM and 8 in on the 6,350 and 8,450 SCFM units; the pipe should match the flange, since a reducer in a header this size adds pressure drop the dryer was designed to avoid.
Air-cooled units need free air at the condenser and a clear path for the warm discharge, with the room held inside the 45 to 115°F range; a ducted discharge is worth considering above 5,000 SCFM. Water-cooled units need supply and return with isolation valves and a strainer. Provide a line-size bypass, a pad rated for the operating weight, and a route from the zero-loss drains to a condensate treatment unit.
