The construction that made the HPRN a plant-air workhorse

The HPRN Series carried the mid-range non-cycling duty from 75 to 1,200 SCFM on thirteen sizes: stainless steel plate heat exchangers with a stamped herringbone pattern that keeps the air turbulent, an integral demister ahead of a timed electric drain, 115 V single phase through 150 SCFM and 460 V three phase from 200 SCFM up. It is the previous generation and is no longer built. Replacements in this flow range are quoted from the DXR Series, the current non-cycling line, size for size on the corrected flow. The HPRN part numbers remain here so a nameplate can be matched to its current equivalent in one step.

Where the DXR Series picks up. DXR sizes from 85 to 1,250 SCFM overlap the HPRN range with a model at or just above every old rating; Single-phase 115 V through 150 SCFM on both lines, so the small replacements need no new circuit; Hot-gas bypass control and a 38°F dew point on both, with R513A or R410A in place of R-134a and R-407C; A zero-loss drain is standard on the DXR, replacing the timed drain that vented air on every cycle.

Cross-referencing an HPRN. Start from the number in the model: an HPRN400-4 was a 400 SCFM, 460 V unit at standard conditions; Apply the inlet, ambient and pressure factors to today's duty; a plant at 80 psig with 110°F inlet air needs about 35 percent more nameplate; Pick the DXR model at or above the corrected figure and check that its connection size suits the existing pipe.

Flows are at 100 psig and 100°F inlet in a 100°F room, and the -1 and -4 suffixes mark 115 V single-phase and 460 V three-phase builds. These part numbers are the previous generation and are kept for cross-reference; new orders in this range are supplied from the DXR Series, the current non-cycling line.

Cabinet sizes, connections and clearances

From a 123 lb floor unit to an 810 lb dryer on 4 in flanges.

The 75, 100 and 125 SCFM units share a 24 x 14 x 32 in cabinet at 123 to 135 lb with 1 in NPT connections; the 150 SCFM unit is 3 in deeper. The 200 and 250 SCFM cabinets are 30 x 17 x 36 in, the 300 and 400 grow to 30 x 20 x 38 and 30 x 21 x 38 in, and the 500 and 600 to 32 x 21 x 48 and 32 x 22 x 50 in at 328 and 353 lb. Connections are 1 in NPT through 200 SCFM and 2 in NPT from 250 to 600 SCFM.

Above that the cabinet changes: the 800 SCFM unit is 59 x 30 x 42 in at 687 lb with a 3 in flange, and the 1,000 and 1,200 SCFM units are 64 x 29 x 45 in at 786 and 810 lb with 4 in flanges. All sizes are air-cooled and want free air to the condenser face and room to pull the panels for coil cleaning, with the hot-air discharge pointed away from the compressor intake. When a DXR replaces one of these, compare the connection size and the height of the inlet and outlet before the crew arrives, because the new cabinets are laid out differently.

The drawing above is the original HPRN cabinet; outline drawings for the replacement DXR size are supplied with every quote.
