| Membrane Air Dryer | Demand Sweep | 0.53 to 46.2 SCFM | 200 psig / 150°F |
Every membrane dryer spends some of its dried air as sweep, the stream that carries water vapor off the outside of the fibers. On a fixed-sweep module that stream runs whenever the line is pressurized, including the hours a robot cell, a lab instrument or a dental chair sits idle. The SSM Series adds a purge control that synchronizes the sweep to demand, so when air stops flowing to the tool, the sweep stops being spent.
The fiber bundles are wound helically inside vertical aluminum housings with an epoxy coating, and the housings connect modularly, so filters and dryer assemble into one column. Nine sizes run from the SSM1 at 0.53 SCFM inlet to the SSM9 at 46.2 SCFM inlet, both at -40°F, 100 psig and 100°F. The SSM9 shows how sweep grows as the dew point falls: at +40°F it takes 138.1 SCFM in and delivers 119.3, at -40°F it takes 46.2 in and delivers 27.4.
A filter monitor and coalescing filter packages are available, and buying the prefilter package with the dryer carries a three-year warranty. The rating limits are 200 psig and 150°F inlet air. Between those limits the published table gives inlet and outlet flows at six inlet temperatures and six dew points for every size, so a selection can be read straight off the page instead of estimated from a curve.
The SSM1 through SSM4 are 4 in wide, 16 to 32 in tall and 8 to 11 lb, on 3/8 or 1/2 in ports. The SSM5 and SSM6 are 5 in wide at 25 and 32 in tall, 14 and 17 lb, on 3/4 or 1 in. The SSM7 is 6 in wide and 33 in tall at 20 lb, and the SSM8 and SSM9 are 8 in wide, 38 and 44 in tall at 40 and 45 lb, all on 1 in ports.
Mount the column vertically on a wall or frame, with the coalescing prefilter directly ahead of it and its drain piped to a safe point. The purge control is the only part that needs wiring; the membrane itself has none. Leave the sweep exhaust open and clear of anything that minds a little air noise. Where the dryer serves a dental operatory or a lab bench, put it in the plant room or a cabinet rather than the treatment space, and run the dried line from there; the column is narrow enough to share a wall with the compressor's receiver.
Roughly the full sweep for every hour the chair sits idle, and at minus 40°F that sweep is a large share of the inlet. On the SSM4, 5.87 SCFM goes in and 4.09 SCFM comes out at that dew point, so close to a third of the inlet is sweep while air is flowing. A fixed-sweep module keeps sweeping with the chair idle; the SSM stops when demand stops. In a practice where chairs stand idle for more of the day than they work, that idle-time sweep is most of what a fixed-sweep dryer would have cost.
Yes, wherever nobody looks at the prefilter between scheduled services. A membrane cannot recover from oil or liquid that slips past a spent coalescing element, so a monitor that shows when the element needs changing protects the part of the column that cannot be cleaned. It matters most in a plant room or cabinet out of sight, which is exactly where a dental or lab installation puts the SSM. The prefilter package it reads is also what carries the three-year warranty.
