| Membrane Air Dryer | Fixed Sweep | 0.53 to 46.2 SCFM | 200 psig / -40°F |
The HMM Series is the modular membrane dryer without a sweep control. A fixed portion of the dried air is always flowing past the outside of the fibers, carrying away the water vapor that permeates them. There is no solenoid and nothing electrical, so it can go into a spray booth, a wash-down room, a remote cabinet or a skid where running a circuit is impractical.
The trade-off is air at idle. Because the sweep never stops, an HMM on a line that sits unused overnight keeps venting dried air. On a load that runs steadily there is little difference, and a fixed sweep has nothing to fail. Where the load is intermittent, the SSM Series puts demand-matched sweep into the same housing family and recovers that idle loss.
The nine HMM sizes carry the same flows as the SSM range, from 0.53 SCFM inlet on the smallest to 46.2 SCFM on the largest at -40°F, 100 psig and 100°F, and far more at +40°F or +50°F. Without the control, each housing is 3.5 to 5.5 in shorter and 3.2 to 4.8 lb lighter than its SSM counterpart. We select the size from the outlet flow and dew point you give us.
Each HMM housing is as wide as the matching SSM size: 4 in on the four smallest, 5 in on the next two, then 6 in and 8 in on the largest three. Each is a few inches shorter because there is no sweep control on it. Ports run from 3/8 or 1/2 in on the small sizes to 1 in on the large ones, and the epoxy-coated aluminum housings connect modularly to their filters.
Install it vertically with the coalescing prefilter ahead, its drain open to a safe point, and the sweep outlet free to atmosphere. A filter monitor can be added to show when the prefilter element needs changing, which is the one routine task on an HMM. Plumb an isolation valve ahead of the assembly so a line shut down for the weekend does not keep sweeping. In a spray booth or wash-down room, mount the column outside the wet zone where it can be reached, and run the dried line through; the housing has nothing to protect from water, but the filter drain is easier to service in the dry.
Yes, if it is sized at a dew point below the coldest temperture that line will see, which for most outdoor runs means the minus 40°F column. The common mistake is choosing a size from the plus 40°F flows, which are about three times larger, and finding ice in January. Size 6, for example, delivers 35.4 SCFM at plus 40°F but 12.0 SCFM at minus 40°F, at 100 psig and 100°F inlet. Put the HMM indoors where the line leaves the building, with its prefilter drain somewhere that stays above freezing.
Because a fixed sweep becomes a larger share of a smaller flow, and the air spends longer in the fibers. With less air passing, more of its water vapor has time to permeate out, and the outlet dew point falls below the figure the table gives for that size. That helps on a branch sized generously, but it has a cost: the sweep does not shrink with the load, so a lightly used HMM spends more air for each SCFM it delivers. On a line that is lightly loaded most of the day, a smaller size, or the demand-sweep SSM, may be the better fit.
The fixed-sweep modules come in the same nine sizes as the SSM Series; sizes below are listed by module number.
