Three families, one timer

Economy, premium and high-pressure valves under the same control

These are timer-operated drains: a solid-state timer with an adjustable interval and open time fires a solenoid valve, and a 6 ft cord is included. The NETD is the economy low-flow unit with a 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 in outlet. The NPTD is the premium unit with a larger valve, in brass at 1/2 in with four voltages or in stainless at 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in. The NHPTD is the high-pressure version for 600 to 6,000 psig vessels. Timed drains vent a little air every cycle, so they belong on intermittent and low-flow service and on vessels where no zero-loss drain is rated.

Where a timer drain is the right answer. A solenoid on a timer has no float to stick in rusty or oily condensate, which is what a receiver on an old piston compressor produces; On a compressor that runs a few hours a day the air vented is small; on one that runs around the clock a zero-loss drain pays back; The stainless NPTD stands up to condensate from synthetic lubricants and to wash-down areas; Above 300 psig the NHPTD is the only drain in the line that is rated for the vessel.

Set the timer to the condensate, not the clock. Start at 2 minutes between cycles and 2 to 5 seconds open in summer, then stretch the interval in winter when the air is drier; If air hisses at the end of every discharge the open time is too long; shorten it until the valve closes on water; A receiver behind a 25 hp compressor makes a gallon of condensate every hour or two on a humid day; the 1/2 in NPTD clears it, the 1/4 in NETD is for filters and small tanks.

NETD, NPTD & NHPTD Timed Drains Applications

NETD, NPTD & NHPTD Timed Drains dimensional outline drawing

Dimensions and mounting

Valve body on the vessel drain port, timer on top, discharge out the side.

The valve threads onto the drain port of the receiver, separator or filter bowl on a short nipple with an isolation ball valve between them, so the drain can be serviced without blowing the tank down. The 1/2 in inlet on the NETD and brass NPTD accepts the common receiver drain size directly; the stainless NPTD is sized by its own port. Mount the valve upright with the timer on top and clear of drips, and keep it at the lowest point of the vessel; a drain fed from the side of a tank leaves an inch of water in the bottom to rust it.

The discharge should run downhill through a short pipe to an oil-water separator or a condensate line; the burst of air at the end of each cycle will blow water out of an open bucket. Route the 6 ft cord to a receptacle at the same voltage as the model code, and on the 24 V units feed them from the compressor controller so a controller alarm is not needed to know the drain has lost power. The NHPTD mounts the same way on the high-pressure vessel, with the isolation valve rated for the vessel pressure.

Confirm the outlet size, the voltage and the pressure class with the quote; the drawing above is representative of the NETD and NPTD bodies.
