Twin-tower drying in a cabinet-sized package

Dry one machine to -40°F without drying the whole plant

The PHDM Series puts heatless regeneration into aluminum columns small enough to sit beside the machine they serve. Eleven sizes from 3 to 177 SCFM cover a single laser head, a lab bench manifold or a packaging machine. Like any heatless dryer, one column dries while the other is purged with part of the dried air, and the two swap on a timed cycle.

Two dew points are selectable. On an 8-minute cycle the dryer delivers class 2, -40°F; on a 4-minute cycle it reaches class 1, -94°F, provided the inlet air is no warmer than 86°F. That condition matters: air straight off a compressor aftercooler is usually warmer, so a class 1 point-of-use dryer belongs downstream of a refrigerated dryer or a long enough indoor run for the air to cool.

The coalescing prefilter and particulate afterfilter come with the dryer, so a lab or machine builder gets a complete package under one part number. The valves are non-lubricated and soft-seated, the front panel shows status with indicator lights, and the dryer carries CSA/UL and CRN approvals. From 24 SCFM up an energy management controller is available to trim purge to the actual load.

PHDM Series Applications

Three column frames

The 3, 9 and 15 SCFM models share a 9.4 x 8.3 in footprint on 3/8 in NPT, from 16.7 to 42.2 in tall and 21.8 to 46 lb. The 24 to 88 SCFM models step to an 18.7 x 14.3 in base on 1/2 to 1 in NPT at 101.5 to 186.5 lb, and the three largest, 118, 147 and 177 SCFM, sit on a 21.1 x 19.5 in base with 1-1/2 in NPT and weigh up to 396.8 lb.

Pipe it as the last treatment before the point of use, after the general plant filtration and dryer. Run the purge exhaust where its pulse every few minutes will not disturb a lab or a quiet room, and leave the front panel in view. If the PHDM replaces a retired HSHD unit on a 7 to 40 SCFM duty, check the ports: the HSHD used 1/2 in NPT, and the three smallest PHDM models use 3/8 in. A dew point monitor on the outlet is worth fitting where a lab or a cleanroom records the air it receives.

Common FAQs

That the dryer arrives with its own electrical listing and its Canadian pressure-equipment registration, so neither has to be sought for the dryer separately. CSA/UL is the listing an electrical inspector looks for on a component inside a machine or panel; CRN is the registration Canadian provinces require for pressure-retaining equipment, and a missing CRN is a familiar reason a machine sits idle on a Canadian floor. Keep both certificates in the machine file, because inspectors ask for them at commissioning.

Because the pipe after the dryer was wet before it was installed, and dry air takes time to pick that water up. Liquid lying in low points, hoses or a drop leg keeps humidifying the air until it is gone, so a monitor at the tool reads well above the dryer outlet for days. Blow down low points before start-up, replace hoses that carried wet air, and use clean, non-rusting pipe for the dried run. If the tool still reads high after a week while the dryer outlet holds, look for a cross-connection feeding wet header air into the branch.

Yes, provided the dryer sits after the receiver and the receiver is big enough to cover the purge between compressor starts. A heatless dryer purges on its cycle whether or not the compressor is running, so on a small system it draws the receiver down and makes the compressor start more often. From 24 SCFM up, the energy management controller reduces that by matching purge to the real load. On the three smallest sizes, switch the dryer off with the compressor at the end of the day so it does not empty the system overnight.
